The Land of Bearing Shapes

Book design and illustration

The book has been my diploma work at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

I have crated both content as well as illustrations and layout design.

Layout

Layout is based on grid with inclusion of several custom styles. The book relates to the old school styles of computer generated graphics and contains therefore basic fonts like Times New Roman and Helvetica.

Styles & references

Due to the fact that it is kind of artistic book, several hand drawn elements have been integrated. The hand-drawn parts are reflecting direct and unfiltered subjective observations.

Although the theory is completely made up, the book follows conventions of a school book. A good example of this practice is usage of semi-transparent paper, just like in an anatomical atlas.

Illustration

Book illustrations are also referring to the basic tools and interface from the software, like wireframes, generic forms of human etc. Default shapes, colors and styles are in this case keys. Most of the illustrations in the book has been created as 3d renderings.

Another important inspirations for the illustrations of the World of Bearing Shapes have also been old masters works.
